Although there are not a lot of choices on the market these days, the best Pyrethrin that I have found that actually works the best comes from a company called Bonide Products Inc. out of Oriskany NY.

Bonide has been in business since 1926 and they have a long history of providing home gardeners with a vast array of solutions for home, lawn and garden pest problems. What’s nice is that their line of pest control products also includes a line of Natural solutions which is welcome news to those like me who are looking to keep harsh chemicals out of the vegetable garden.

Who Will Benefit From a Pyrethrin Spray?

Anyone who has a vegetable garden knows that at times you will encounter insects that can take out your entire crop. As soon as you start seeing little holes in the leaves of your plants, there is a bug at work eating and destroying your vegetables.

The Bonide Pyrethrin spray is perfect in these situations and is mainly geared towards the home gardener who is looking for safe alternatives to chemical insecticides which we’re now finding out are very harmful to your health.

Also, the Pyrethrin is great for those that have troubles not just in the vegetable garden but in the their back yards as well. In my neck of the woods we have had heavy infestations of Stink Bugs and the Bonide Pyrethrin is the only garden spray I’ve found that will actually kill and repel these bugs and keep them away from my yard. So if you have issues with beetles, stink bugs, caterpillars, aphids or even fleas, ticks, box elder bugs or fire ants, you will probably benefit greatly from giving Bonide a try.

What Are Others Saying About Bonide’s Pyrethrin sprays?

The Bonide Pyrethrin Garden Inspect Spray Concentrate is one of their natural insecticides and has been a popular choice for home gardeners for some time now.

I for one have used it with great success in killing unwanted insects that year after year have destroyed my vegetable gardens. I would plant my garden in May and by July after anxiously awaiting those juicy tomatoes, my crop would be destroyed by little aphids and other bugs that would send all of my hard work and time down the drain. It was EXTREMELY frustrating and I needed to find a safe way to get rid of these crop killers. When I started using Pyrethrin sprays, all of that changed for the good thankfully.

And, after reading more about it online, I’ve found that many other gardeners love this product too and here are some of the positive things people have said about Bonide’s Pyrethrin spray:

bonide pyrethrin garden insect spray- “Best Mosquito Repellant I have found!…” (read more)
- “As insecticides go it’s probably the closest thing you can get to ‘natural’” (read more)
- “We have had far less problems with bugs, and they really seem to not like it!” (read more)
- “If fungus gnats have been plaguing you, I would recommend this twenty times over.” (read more)
- “LOVE LOVE LOVE…needing more.” (read more)
- “This has worked to control adult mosquitoes.” (read more)
- “Finally I’ve found something that works.” (read more)

One of the only negatives I’ve read was regarding the size of the bottle as the most popular item on Amazon.com is a small 8oz container. I think overall the 8oz does get me a lot of spray since it’s in concentrate form and is very affordable in this size. Plus it gives the homeowner a ‘cheap’ way of buying the product and trying it out without investing a lot of money which is always nice.

NOTE: Bonide also has a larger pint size bottle (16oz) that retails for a bit more which is welcome news to gardeners who use this product more often and have heavy infestations of insects in their yards and gardens.

So How Does Bonide’s Pyrethrin Spray Work?

Since Pyrethrin is derived from the leaves of the chrysanthemum, it’s an all natural solution to taking care of pests in your back yard and garden. What the Pyrethrins do is once it’s sprayed in your garden and comes in contact with an insect, it begins affecting the nervous system of the insect by forcing the insect’s nerves to repeatedly fire for extended periods of time and this ultimately is the demise of the insect.

In most cases, once an insect makes contact with the Pyrethrins, it usually doesn’t take more than just a few seconds before the insect dies.

In addition, the residual effects of Pyrethrins help as a repellant, keeping insects away from the sprayed area for extended periods of time. And since the product is biodegradable, over time the sun will help to disintegrate the Pyrethins which means you do not have to worry about a buildup of the insecticide in the area you sprayed. This is much better than spraying chemical insecticides that can build up on your vegetables over time which will eventually land on your kitchen table.

How Much Does It Cost?

The smaller size bottle from Bonide is not very large (only 8oz) but since it’s in concentrate form you will get around 5-10 bonide pyrethrin spray back of bottlegallons of useable spray when you mix it in the right proportions (which is around 2-3 tablespoons per gallon of water.)

When you do the math and compare it to the cheapest price online at Amazon.com, you’re looking at spending about $1-2 per gallon which is not bad at all considering some chemical sprays at Lowes and Home Depot will run you about $10-15 for a 2-gallon jug.

By buying the larger 16oz pint size bottle, the numbers are even better so it really depends on whether you’re giving the product a try for the first time or are looking to stock up if the Pyrethrin has worked well for you in the past.

My Recommendation:

After doing a lot of research on the different ways to handle insects in our garden and around our home, there was really only one choice in the end and I couldn’t be happier with the Bonide Pyrethrin spray.

I did a LOT of reading online to find the right spray an literally everything pointed to using the Bonide Pyrethrin concentrate because of it’s effectiveness at handling insects like mosquitoes and other aphids and beetles that destroy our tomato plants every year. I really wanted a “natural” solution as I’ve read too much about how much chemical residues are present in the fruits and vegetables I purchase weekly at local grocery stores and this was an effective and cheap way for me to accomplish bringing safe produce into my home.

At this point, I’ve used the Bonide Pyrethrin Spray for the last two seasons and all I can say is that this stuff really works well. It’s very easy to use and the only thing you’ll need to purchase outside of the Pyrethrin concentrate bottle is a good 1-Gallon Lawn and Garden Sprayer that you can also find on Amazon online or at your local home store. Outside of the sprayer and some water from your garden hose, you’ll be all set and bug free the NATURAL way!

Where Is The Best Place To Buy Pyrethrin Sprays?

Not all home and garden stores carry the Bonide products which is why buying online and having it delivered to your door is a great option. The best prices I’ve found are at Amazon.com as they have a lot of 3rd party vendors who sell garden products through their site and many carry the Bonide Pyrethrin.

In today’s world, where there is more of a push for more eco-friendly and green alternatives to many of our most commonly and widely used products, there exists Pyrethrum, a compound derived from the spices of the chrysanthemum. For over 200 years this is been used as a natural pesticide and has been proven to be extremely effective as well. In fact, Napoleon used the crushed leaves of the chrysanthemum to fight off insect problems in and among his army. While in the past it was primarily as a powder, today it is used as a liquid solvent and is known as Pyrethrin Spray.

Pyrethrin refers to a derivative of the flowers of the pyrethrum plants from the chrysanthemum family. Chrysanthemum flowers are great garden flowers but more than that they are useful for fighting off insects. The spray is made from the dried head of the plants and in fact, the leaves and flowers of the chrysanthemums have been used for hundreds of years as insect repellents.

Today, Pyrethrin Sprays are often made with a combination of pyrethrum and permethrin. The reason why these two products are mixed together is because while pyrethrum is an extremely effective natural insecticide, it doesn’t hold up very well under sunlight. It becomes extremely unstable and ineffective. By adding a synthetic compound known as permethrin, which is based on pyrethrum but holds up better in sunlight, this particular insect spray can be very effective for a host of insect issues that are common in an average garden.

However, even though this product is more stable in the sunlight, thanks to the synthetic pyrethrum based compound, it still can become quite unstable in the sun. This is the main reason why this particular insecticide is not used in commercial agriculture.

For a home garden or a smaller commercial garden, this can be a very excellent insecticide use. It can be used up to the last day before harvest and it has such a low toxicity rating that it is not harmful to anyone with the exception of insects, cats and other smaller animals. In these cases, this particular natural insecticide can be extremely toxic.

Gardeners and farmers have continually searched for greener options for pesticides and insecticides but for the most part they wait as true organic insecticides that are effective are still waiting to be discovered. Fortunately with pyrethrum, you have a compound that has been around for many years and has shown to be extremely effective as well as safe. If you are looking for more eco-friendly way to manage leaf eating pests and insects, then consider a Pyrethrin Spray as it may be the perfect option for you and your garden.

There are a number of different products that people use to repel certain insects such as mosquitoes and flying insects. There are also products that people use to kill these insects as well but many prefer not like to use them because they are full of poisons and chemicals. This, however, isn’t the case with Pyrethrin Spray which is a compound that natural kills these insects without the need of chemicals that are harmful to humans.

How Pyrethrin Spray works is quite simple. This organic compound actually contains neurotoxins that shut down the nervous system in mosquitoes and other flying insects. The compound itself comes from chrysanthemums but it can also be made in a lab as well (that product is called Permethrin.) When found in small amounts, like you would find in chrysanthemum flowers, Pyrethrin also works extremely well as an insect repellent. That’s why including these flowers in your garden can be an excellent addition and why you’ll find many home gardeners adding chrysanthemums to their landscape.

Because of the organic nature of this product, as well as the fact that it’s one of the few organic products that are just as effective as chemical based products. more and more companies are switching to Pyrethrin sprays to repel and kill insects. Because of how quickly Pyrethrin breaks down, you can actually use it on your plants and even your garden foods every day, even on the day you plan on picking your veggies and/or fruit for eating.

Sometimes you’ll find that Pyrethrin is combined with permethrin to give it more stability and longevity. If you happen to choose a product which contains Permethrin then you should avoid using it if you have cats. Permethrin is highly toxic for cats and other small animals and could kill your pets should they ingest it. As an insecticide, a permethrin spray is best for a home gardener that lives in an area that is free of pets.

Using a natural insecticide is an excellent way to reduce the impact that chemicals have on the environment in general. With the use of a pyrethrum like Pyrethrin and any other organic insecticides, you can ensure that you’re eating organic fruits and veggies that won’t damage your body with harmful chemicals. As time goes by, it’s possible that you’ll see this move with your local farmers as well, which will have an even larger positive impact on the environment.
